The new GARMIN tactix 8 Solar is a robust smartwatch designed for professional use under extreme conditions. Whether in the field, during tactical missions, or training, this watch offers reliable technology, thoughtful features, and exceptional endurance.
Design and Materials
Case
The 51 mm case is crafted from fiber-reinforced polymer, combined with a titanium back and a DLC-coated titanium bezel-stable and resilient, even under the toughest demands. Suitable for diving up to 40 meters, it meets the military standard MIL-STD-810. Weighing in at 95 g, it's surprisingly light given its sturdy construction. Operation is via five side buttons that function reliably even with gloves or in wet conditions.
Display
The 1.4-inch MIP display ensures good readability in direct sunlight. It's protected by scratch-resistant Power Sapphire glass. Users can choose between two font sizes—depending on what suits best.
Strap
Included are two straps. One made of nylon and another of silicone. Both can be quickly changed thanks to the QuickFit system. They fit wrist circumferences from 127 to 210 mm.
Technology
Battery Life
A clear advantage of the tactix 8 is its enormous endurance. In smartwatch mode, the battery lasts around 30 days, with solar charging extending it up to 48 days. In expedition mode, it lasts up to 50 days-with solar support even up to an incredible 118 days. Charging is via the included data transfer cable, in case the sun isn't sufficient.
Operating System
The watch offers 32 GB of internal storage-ample space for maps, music, or additional apps. Connections are made via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or ANT+. Additional applications can be installed via the Garmin Connect IQ Store. The system runs smoothly, and operation is intuitive.
Functions
For Tactical Missions
This watch is clearly aimed at professionals. Included is the Applied Ballistics Ultralight calculator, which provides precise ballistic calculations-ideal for shooters and special units. The Jumpmaster mode is suitable for parachute jumps, and thanks to dual-position GPS, two coordinate systems can be displayed simultaneously, such as UTM and MGRS. Stealth mode disables GPS and radio connections at the push of a button. An optional Kill Switch mode can delete all user data in an emergency. For use with NVGs, the night vision mode and an integrated LED flashlight with white and green light are helpful.
Navigation & Maps
The tactix 8 supports GPS, GLONASS, and GALILEO for accurate location data even in challenging environments. The watch automatically adjusts GPS settings using SatIQ to save energy without sacrificing accuracy. Topographic maps of Europe, ski, and golf course maps are already pre-installed.
Sports and Fitness Features
With numerous sports and outdoor profiles, the tactix 8 covers virtually every activity—from hiking to strength training to HIIT. For many workouts, animated exercises are available directly on the watch. The PacePro feature helps in pacing routes, especially in terrain. Running times can also be predicted based on individual performance data.
Health Functions
In addition to a reliable pulse sensor, the watch also measures oxygen saturation, which is particularly helpful during high-altitude hikes or strenuous activity. The sleep coach even detects short naps and analyzes sleep quality. Frequent travelers benefit from the jet lag advisor, which provides individual adjustment tips. Additionally, the Body Battery indicates how well the body is recovered.
Smart Functions in Everyday Life
Even outside of missions and training, the tactix 8 scores with practical everyday functions. Music can be stored and played offline via Spotify, Deezer, or Amazon Music. Garmin Pay enables contactless payments. Notifications appear directly on the wrist, and calls are also possible thanks to the integrated speaker and microphone. Particularly helpful is the emergency function with live location transmission.
