Description
Proven Military Sleeping Bag for Three Seasons
The Carinthia Defence 4 is a proven classic among 3-season sleeping bags. Its robust construction, high-performance G-LOFT insulation and well-engineered design make it a reliable choice for demanding operational conditions. Featuring a distinctive centrally positioned zipper, a windproof and water-repellent outer shell and a temperature rating down to -15 °C, it combines functional design with excellent thermal performance.
A Sleeping Bag System for Extreme Cold
For particularly low temperatures, the Defence 4 can be combined with the Carinthia Tropen. Both sleeping bags can be connected at the foot section using integrated loops and a cord or small carabiners. Their different cuts help to reduce the formation of cold spots.
When combined, the two models provide thermal performance approximately equivalent to that of the Carinthia Defence 6. This allows the sleeping system to be adapted flexibly to particularly cold operational environments.
G-LOFT ISO+ – Thermal Performance Through Advanced Fiber Structure
The G-LOFT ISO+ insulation consists of 100% polyester and is based on high-quality bicomponent polymers with properties closely resembling those of natural down. The three-dimensional crimping of the fibers, known as 3D crimping, creates a resilient structure with excellent thermal insulation.
This specialized fiber architecture combines reliable heat retention with high mechanical durability, forming the basis of the sleeping bag's thermal performance.
Differential Cut – Insulation Under Pressure
The differential cut prevents body weight from compressing all insulation layers simultaneously. While the innermost layer absorbs direct pressure, the more generously cut outer insulation layers remain largely unaffected.
Additional air pockets maintain separation between the individual layers and stabilize their structure. This helps preserve insulation performance even when changing sleeping positions.
Thermoflect – Making Efficient Use of Body Heat
Thermoflect technology utilizes body heat to reduce thermal loss inside the sleeping bag. The exceptionally lightweight, soft and breathable cotton fabric can increase heat retention by up to 11%.
Greater Freedom of Movement in the Footbox
The trapezoidal footbox provides sufficient room for a natural foot position. Its shape also allows additional items such as clothing or a shoe bag to be stored inside the foot section.
Mummy Shape with Reduced Internal Volume
The classic mummy shape combines a close-fitting design with compact construction. The tapered cut towards the foot section reduces material requirements, weight and packed volume.
As the internal volume gradually decreases below the knees, less air needs to be warmed by body heat. This supports efficient heat retention while minimizing unnecessary space.
Two-Layer Construction with a Protective Outer Shell
The sandwich construction consists of two offset G-LOFT Plus insulation layers and a separately attached outer shell. This creates an additional insulating air layer between the insulation and the outer fabric.
The particularly lightweight and durable outer fabric made from 100% polyamide features a microporous coating with water-repellent properties. As the outer surface has no needle perforations, it remains largely protected against the penetration of water and air. The inner lining is also made from 100% polyamide.
Quick Exit and Controlled Ventilation
The centrally positioned two-way zipper allows the sleeping bag to be opened quickly. An integrated anti-snag strip prevents the surrounding fabric from becoming caught in the zipper. The lower zipper slider also allows the foot section to be opened separately for ventilation.
An external zipper cover flap protects against wind and moisture, while the internal G-LOFT draft tube minimizes heat loss along the closure.
Choosing the Right Size for Optimal Thermal Performance
The Carinthia Defence 4 is available in three sizes. Selection should primarily be based on body height to ensure a close-fitting design.
- M (185): For users up to 185 cm tall
- L (200): For users up to 200 cm tall
- XL (220): For users up to 220 cm tall
For users with a broader build, wider shoulders or those wishing to accommodate additional clothing or equipment inside the sleeping bag, choosing the next larger size may be advisable.
Important: Excessive internal space can reduce thermal efficiency, as the body must warm a larger volume of air and cold spots may develop. The sleeping bag should therefore fit closely without restricting movement.

Care Instructions for G-LOFT Sleeping Bags
G-LOFT sleeping bags are machine washable (gentle cycle, max. 30°C) and suitable for tumble drying at low temperature. Before washing, close all fasteners, loosen drawcords and turn the sleeping bag inside out. A washing machine with a minimum capacity of 7 kg is required. The gentlest cleaning method remains hand washing in warm water using detergent for synthetic fibers. After washing, rinse several times to remove any detergent residues.
Spin at a maximum of 500 rpm, then air dry – avoid direct sunlight. Machine drying is possible at very low heat on the most gentle setting. Shake the sleeping bag occasionally during drying; for heavy sleeping bags over 2 kg, the use of an industrial dryer is recommended.
Proper Storage for G-LOFT Sleeping Bags
G-LOFT sleeping bags should always be stored uncompressed in order to maintain the insulation performance of the filling. Ideally, store the sleeping bag hanging, laid out flat or with zippers open in a large mesh bag in a dry, well-ventilated area. The insulation requires sufficient space to expand and recover. The compression sack should only be used for transport – do not roll the sleeping bag, but instead stuff it loosely into the sack from the foot end with the zipper open, as repeated rolling stresses the filling in the same areas and may damage the construction.
