  Black Samurai

  In 1579, a warrior of African descent arrived in Japan. He later became known as the legendary "Black Samurai," "Yasuke," as he was named by the great feudal Lord Nobunaga, whom he served. He was 6'2" tall, and legend has it he had the "strength of 10 men." Yasuke faithfully served Lord Nobunaga until his lord was betrayed by a general and committed seppuku, the ritual suicide, to ensure an honorable death. It is said that Yasuke escaped with his Lord's head to deny their enemy. Little is known about Yasuke's fate thereafter, except that he did not die at the hands of his enemy.
