Carinthia HIG 5.0 Jacket – High Insulation for Variable Operational Profiles
The Carinthia HIG 5.0 Jacket takes the High Insulation Garment from the Carinthia Military Line into its fifth generation. Within the classic LIG, MIG and HIG system, it represents the warmest level of insulation and is positioned between movement-oriented cold-weather clothing and equipment for extreme cold. The new construction combines high insulation performance with controllable ventilation and features adapted to changing phases of exertion.
With an operational range down to -20°C, the HIG 5.0 protects against significant heat loss during prolonged rest and stationary periods. At the same time, the integrated ventilation openings allow active regulation of the body climate as soon as physical exertion increases. The jacket is therefore specifically designed for operational profiles in which intensive movement and stationary phases regularly alternate.High G-LOFT Thermal Performance Down to -20°C
The required cold protection is provided by high-performance G-LOFT insulation with 145 g/m² on the body and 110 g/m² on the sleeves. The higher weight around the torso concentrates heat retention on the particularly cold-sensitive center of the body, while the balanced insulation in the sleeves maintains mobility during tactical activities.
The insulation material, made entirely from 100% polyester, is resistant to moisture and retains its thermal performance even in wet conditions. These material properties support reliable cold protection during prolonged periods outdoors, multi-day operations and changeable winter conditions.
Active Ventilation via Side Pit Zips
To control the high thermal performance as physical activity increases, the HIG 5.0 features new pit zips in the underarm area. The side ventilation openings allow excess heat and moisture generated inside the jacket to escape in a controlled manner, thereby reducing the risk of heat build-up.
When activity levels decrease, the openings can be completely closed again to maintain the jacket’s insulating effect. Switching between ventilation and heat retention does not require removing the jacket and allows flexible adaptation to different levels of exertion.
Concealed Two-Way Zipper with Weather Protection
The revised front section is equipped with a new double-separating two-way zipper. It can be opened from both the top and the bottom, providing additional freedom of movement when sitting, kneeling, driving or working while wearing equipment.
The front zipper has a concealed construction and is protected against incoming cold air by a wind flap. An integrated chin guard prevents direct contact between the zipper and the skin and increases comfort when the collar is fully closed.
Revised Quilting Design for Even Insulation
A new quilting design is used on the inside of the fifth generation. The adapted construction stabilizes the distribution of the insulation material and counteracts the formation of cold zones that can be caused by seams or uneven fill distribution.
As a result, thermal performance remains as evenly distributed as possible across the entire upper body. This constructional advantage is particularly relevant during stationary activities, rest phases and prolonged periods in cold regions where consistent heat retention is required.
Optimized Internal Storage for Gloves and Equipment
The revised internal mesh pockets provide generous storage space for gloves, a beanie and temperature-sensitive equipment. Their position close to the body allows damp gloves to be warmed using the available body heat and supports the drying process while the jacket is being worn.
Additional optimized internal pockets expand the storage options for personal operational equipment. The jacket also features an internal Napoleon pocket with a zipper in which important items or objects that must not be lost can be stored securely, protected and reliably accessible.
Modified Sleeve Cuffs for Sealed Transitions
The sleeve cuffs have also been functionally revised for the HIG 5.0. Their modified construction ensures a controlled fit around the wrist and reduces the ingress of cold air into the sleeves.
At the same time, the cuffs make it easier to combine the jacket with tactical gloves and more heavily insulated winter gloves. Excess material at the transition between the sleeve and glove is reduced, maintaining hand mobility even within a fully closed cold-protection system.
Windproof and Highly Water-Repellent Construction
Carinthia uses the Carinthia SOF 2L fabric made from 100% polyamide as the outer material. The windproof and highly water-repellent construction protects against cold airflow, light moisture and rapid changes in the weather, thereby keeping external influences away from the insulation.
Combined with the moisture-resistant G-LOFT filling, it creates a durable protection system for demanding winter conditions. The lining is also made from 100% polyamide and allows the jacket to slide on and off easily over a uniform, functional underwear or additional insulating clothing layers.
Designed for Cold Regions and Changing Levels of Exertion
The Carinthia HIG 5.0 Jacket is intended for infantry, military special forces and other professional users with varying operational intensities. It is suitable for operations in which movement-intensive sections, prolonged stationary periods and rest phases alternate in low temperatures.
Expedition participants on multi-day tours and experienced bushcraft and survival users also benefit from the combination of high thermal performance and adjustable ventilation. Weighing approximately 1,200 g in size M and with a packed size of around 17 × 33 cm, the jacket can be transported in a tactical backpack, expedition luggage or vehicle. The HIG 5.0 is available in sizes S to XXL.

LIG, MIG or HIG – Which Jacket Suits the Operational Profile?
The LIG 5.0 is a minimalist jacket, ideal as a midlayer or for mild, dry winter days down to approx. -5 °C. It provides basic weather protection and good mobility, but only light insulation and no reduced infrared signature. The MIG 5.0 , by contrast, is a well-balanced all-rounder with an insulated hood, a practical pocket configuration and reliable insulation down to -15 °C. It is suitable for demanding outdoor activities in cold conditions and robust enough for tactical operations. The HIG 5.0 is the warmest of the three jackets, with an extended cut and enhanced cold protection down to -20 °C. It is particularly suitable for prolonged periods in extreme cold, such as during static operations or expeditions. -
